How to Set Targets To Crush the Next Twelve Months
As we wrap up the first quarter of 2021, you probably have a pretty good idea of where you stand. Whether you feel you’re on track with your goals, or you’re looking for direction, I’m going to share my top tips for crushing the next twelve months.
Forget wishy-washy — I want to help you set targeted goals, and then build systems to work towards your vision. With this method, you’ll find more freedom, as well as more focus, to do what you aim to achieve. 95% of millionaires set goals, which is why I believe it’s a valuable metric.
Without these goals, you’re more liable to live your life by default, without any sort of intention. By establishing your vision, and where you want to be, you can motivate yourself to move forward, while creating systems and processes to build even greater momentum.
What is a Goal?
Before digging in, I want to be clear: these are super specific, identifiable targets, not vague ideas. Your overarching goal, for example, may be to get healthier. But that alone tells us nothing about how you can get there, or what health looks like to you. First, you have to define what health looks like to you, and what you want out of your health journey, in order to get there. Your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time defined.
For you, perhaps health is measured by physical activity. In which case, you would identify how active you want to be, for how long. Maybe, that means working out five days a week, for a minimum amount of time. This is a goal you can track and monitor. Instead, or even in conjunction with, you may decide that you want to focus on eating habits. Identifying what a healthy meal looks like to you, and how many of those meals you want to have each week, is measurable.
Other health-related goals may include getting 8-hours of sleep, or taking certain supplements, or drinking a gallon of water a day. You could do all of these things, or a few at a time. What matters is that you choose what is important to you, lay out your framework, and then set up systems that allow you to be successful.
Let’s say your overall goal was to lose 20 pounds — you’re likely to lose that weight quicker than you thought possible, because you identified what you wanted to do, created a sustainable framework, and were intentional in your approach.
Dave Osborn’s Framework
Goals are a huge part of my work, and I love using Dave Osborn’s framework to guide my own goal-setting process. He has eight guidelines that I want to share with you today, so that you can set the most effective goals possible, to achieving your dream.
He has eight points for goal-setting in his GoBundance community, governing the eight areas of your life you should be tracking and setting goals in.
Physical well-being helps all areas of your life, and can also extend the length and enjoyment of your life overall. We established the kinds of goals you could identify in this arena, and of course there are many more ways to track health that I haven’t mentioned.
What are your family goals? If you’re married, do you have a goal to strengthen your relationship with your spouse? What is their love language, and how will you best do this? Could you have two date nights a month? What do you want out of those date nights?
Then, you have to examine the processes that will help you achieve these goals? Will you share a Google calendar so you both remember your date nights? Maybe you take turns planning, so there’s an active component.
If you also have children, maybe your family goals include weekend time together, or four family dinners a week. Regardless of your goals, remember to make them track-able.
No matter your faith or spirituality, you can set these goals. Maybe, your goal is to meditate or pray ever day of the week, for at least ten minutes. Perhaps your goal is to attend all of your church’s services. For some, journaling fulfills your spiritual goals.
How do you like to learn, or educate yourself? If you like to read, set a goal to read one book a week, or two books a month, or whatever pace is sustainable for you. If you prefer visual learning, commit to signing up for a class or webinar a week, or subscribe to a platform that has online learning and incorporate it into your day.
How will you fulfill your lifestyle and hobbies? Will you take one or two vacations a year, and how will you ensure those will happen? Do you have a fund that you can save 10–20% into for your vacation time? If you enjoy a certain hobby, maybe you make time each week to practice that hobby. Perhaps eating out, or going to movies is important to you — how often will you prioritize it, and how will you ensure it happens? (And with pandemic closures, how will you get creative with it?)
Perhaps you just want to add a new hobby. I, myself, decided to learn how to juggle, and built time into my week to learn it.
What environment are you in, and how are you cultivating that? This can be your personal environment, or your professional environment. Do you want to renovate your house — what are the steps to creating your ideal environment? In a professional space, perhaps you want to do more networking and surround yourself with more like-minded people. How do you build that into your time?
What relationships are important to you, and how do you cultivate them?
This one is likely self-explanatory, but what are your business goals? How will you grow, and what does it take to achieve that growth? You can really go in a million directions here, so do what feels right, and create actionable steps that you can follow.
Lastly, we have wealth. What are your goals for building wealth — what assets do you want to fund or acquire, and how will you do so? What systems are you using to manage your money, and how do you wish to evolve?
The Power of Goals
Following Osborn’s lead, these are what he (and I) view as the eight essential areas of your life that you should be setting goals. The trick is to choose three goals per category — just enough to really make traction, and not too much that you get overwhelmed. So decide what you want out of your next 12 months for each area of your life, and start identifying how you’re going to get there. I believe you’ll be able to achieve things you may not have believed possible.
No matter how 2021 has been going, remember that you have the power to take back the reigns and do unbelievable things.
